The palm trees in the young woman’s hair are a reference to native plants - She represents the people of Cuba and her posture alludes to their decades of hunger and oppression. The banana is used as an instrument of punishment, held as a weapon of death: food as a method of control. The banana is presented to the girl with aggression by the powerful fist of the oppressive regime, depicted in its traditional red: You eat when I tell you and do as I say or you die.
